BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Sali is a municipality and the largest settlement on Dugi otok, its municipal and administrative center. It is located on the northeastern part of this island. It has some 740 inhabitants who are traditionally engaged in fishing, agriculture, shipbuilding and, for the last fifty years, tourism. Sali is connected to Zadar on the mainland by a daily catamaran line. There is also an airport in Zadar.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND SIGHTS
Sali is a place with a thousand-year-old fishing tradition, confirmed by written documents from the 10th century, and the ancient olive groves that surround the village are proof of the intensive agricultural activity maintained over the centuries. Salj culture is represented by sacred objects such as the parish church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 17th century, the church of St. Rock and St. Nicholas, while in the fields of Salj there are remains of floor plans of other Christian churches. Some houses in Salim are over 100 years old.
BEACHES
Sali is the closest place to Telašćica nature park. The beaches in the nature park are the most beautiful on this part of the island. Since Sali is located only 2 kilometers to the east, most of the guests of this small town enjoy the beauty and beaches inside the park. The most famous and most beautiful place for swimming is the salt lake Mir. The lake was created after the last ice age, when the sea level rose by approximately 120 meters, and the karst depression was filled with sea through numerous underground fissures. The peculiarity of the lake is the higher salinity of the sea and the greater amplitude in temperature, so in summer the sea in the lake is extremely hot, while in winter it is colder than in the open sea.
OTHER CONTENTS
One of the most interesting events in Salj is the Saljska užance, a three-day festival, during which various entertainment, sports and gastronomic events are organized. Saljska čitaonica is the organizer of many interesting events, such as presentations of traditional Salj dishes and classical music concerts. Try local and Dalmatian specialties in Spageterino, Goro, Kornat and Toni restaurants, and in Tilago, Kod Sipe and Marin taverns.
SPORT
Active holiday lovers can rent a boat, bicycle or scooter in Salim, and there is also a taxi service that offers rides all over the island. In the summer, a futsal tournament is organized, as well as chess, table tennis and basketball tournaments.
WHAT TO DO AND POSSIBILITIES OF EXCURSIONS
Sali is located near PP Telaščica and NP Kornati, so a visit to them is essential during your stay on the island. A regular catamaran line runs from the town to Zadar, the cultural and entertainment center of the region. From Zadar you can go to old Nin, Biograd or Šibenik, to NP North Velebit or Paklenica, PP Vrana lake or to Velebit.
ACCOMMODATION
In a beautiful pine forest in the small bay "Sašćica" not far from the very center of Sali, there is only the Sali hotel complex with its four pavilions. You can also find accommodation in private apartments and holiday homes. There is also a small port in Sali with moorings for ships
