BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Sućuraj is a settlement and municipality on the eastern tip of the island of Hvar, 77 km from the town of Hvar. The municipality consists of three settlements: Sućuraj, Bogomolja and Selca. The easiest way to reach Sućuraj is by ferry from Drvenik on the Makarska Riviera. A slightly longer journey is from Split to Stari Grad or Hvar. According to the last census, it has 463 inhabitants, who mainly live from tourism, fishing and agriculture.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Archaeological finds testify to life in this area since ancient times. The first known inhabitants of Sućuraj were the Illyrians. Their queen Teuta had her castle here in the 3rd century BC. The most important historical sights are: the Franciscan monastery (formerly Augustinian) from the 9th century, the fortress-fortress from the 17th century, the church of St. Anthony from the 17th century, the lighthouse from the 19th century and the church of St. George from the 19th century. There is also a monument in Sućuraj written in Croatian Cyrillic, erected in 1655.
BEACHES
There are two beaches near the town. On the south side is the sandy beach Česminica, and on the north is Bilina. There are numerous beautiful coves around Sućuraj, the most picturesque of which are Perna on the south side and Mlaska on the north. Both are sandy. There is also a campsite in Mlaska. About ten kilometers from Sućuraj, on the south side, is the cove Mrtinovik.
OTHER CONTENT
The gastronomic offer includes traditional local specialties based on fish, crabs, shellfish, wine and olive oil. You can find them in the restaurants Fortica, Gusarska luka, Vala and in the restaurant of the Adriatic Mlaska campsite. The offer is completed by a pizzeria and a pastry shop. Sućuraj is an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. In the evenings, entertainment is offered by cafes and fishermen's nights, which are organized several times in the summer. For fans of alternative rock and electronic music, there is the Tam Tam Music Festival. In the summer, exhibitions, concerts and performances by traveling theater groups are also occasionally organized.
SPORT
Cycling, running and hiking enthusiasts can enjoy more than 40 km of trails, while diving, sailing and fishing enthusiasts have a beautiful sea area at their disposal. It is possible to rent a boat, bicycle, scooter or car. There is also a five-a-side football pitch in the village.
WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
In Sućuraj, excursions and fish picnics are organized by boat to neighboring towns on the Makarska Riviera, the Pelješac Peninsula and the island of Korčula. The island of Hvar can be visited by car, taxi or regular bus lines. The proximity of the mainland allows for day trips to Split, Dubrovnik and various other towns throughout Dalmatia and Herzegovina.
ACCOMMODATION
Private renters offer numerous rooms, apartments, holiday homes and guesthouses. There is also the Trpimir hotel. Due to its good harbour, Sućuraj is a destination for many yachtsmen who have all the necessary facilities at their disposal. Accommodation is also offered in the car camp in the Mlaska bay, 4 km from the centre.
