BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Valun is a village and port in the central part of the island of Cres. It is located on the coast of the bay of the same name and has about 60 inhabitants. Arrival by car is achieved after crossing the Krk Bridge and arriving at the Krk port of Valbiska. From Valbiska, you can take a ferry to the Merag port, which is 28 kilometers away. Another option is to take a ferry from the Brestova port in eastern Istria to the Cres port of Porozina, which is a little less than 40 kilometers from Valun. For arrivals by plane, the Rijeka Airport is located near Omišalj on the island of Krk. The nearest train station is in Rijeka, which is about 90 kilometers away. After arriving by train, you can leave the bus station in Rijeka for the Cres town station. After arriving in Cres, you can take a local bus to Valun, which is about 15 kilometers away. In the port of Rijeka, you can also travel by catamaran to the island of Cres. The catamaran arrives at the Cres port and then you also travel by local bus to Valun.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
Valun was founded as a port of the old settlement of Bućev, the remains of which were found near the local church. Although Valun was certainly inhabited in ancient times, the most significant historical discovery that testifies to the settlement and culture of Valun dates back to the 11th century. It is the Valun Tablet, which was found in the old church of St. Mark. The Valun Tablet is, along with the Baška Tablet, the oldest Croatian Glagolitic epigraphic monument and says a lot about the culture and customs of this region. Another interesting fact that says a lot about Glagolitic culture is the Glagolitic Lapidarium, which displays copies of the oldest Glagolitic inscriptions from Istria, Dalmatia and Kvarner.
BEACHES
In the village and its surroundings there are two beautiful pebble beaches - Valun beach and Zdovica beach. They are surrounded by dense pine forests and the sea on the beaches is very clean. The beaches are very popular and have accompanying facilities and catering facilities that provide a pleasant all-day stay.
OTHER CONTENT
The gastronomic offer of Valun is centered around the restaurants and taverns MaMaLu, San Marco and Tos Juna. Relaxing with a coffee or a refreshing drink is possible in the café bars Feruco and Valunjanka. During the summer season, concerts by a capella groups and other musical artists can be expected in Valun in a splendid seaside setting. The central event during the summer season is the Valun Night, during which a number of interesting events and gastronomic manifestations take place.
SPORT
Various water sports equipment can be rented in facilities next to the beaches of Valun and Zdovica. The surroundings of Valun offer hilly areas with cycling trails that are popular due to the close proximity of untouched nature. Other sports activities are available in the town of Cres, 15 kilometers from Valun.
WHAT TO DO – EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
An interesting excursion option is the Cres-Nedomišlje-Valun promenade. It is 12 kilometers long and is located to the right of Piskel Bay. It leads through olive groves and the island's rocky terrain, and everyone will be enchanted by the beauty of the Nedomišlje bay with its pebble beach and clear sea. The Tramuntana forest is another natural location that can be visited if you head towards the northern part of the island. For boat trips during which you can see the Cres archipelago and nearby islands, you need to go to the town of Cres.
ACCOMMODATION
There are no hotels in Valun, and the nearest hotel accommodation facility is Kimen in the town of Cres. The offer of private apartments is very rich, and the Zdovice campsite is a great place to stay with excellent facilities. The nearest marinas are ACI Marina Cres and the Cres Shipyard marina, which are about 15 kilometers from Valun.
