BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Zavala is a small fishing village on the southern side of the island of Hvar, in the Split-Dalmatia County. It belongs to the municipality of Jelsa. It is 7 km from Jelsa and 35 km from the town of Hvar. It was formed by separating part of the settlement of Pitve and in recent years has been developing as a tourist resort with tourist facilities. In front of Zavala is the islet of Šćedro, 2.5 km from the coast. A boat from Zavala runs to Šćedro daily. It is connected to the rest of the island by the Pitve-Zavala tunnel. Zavala can be reached via Hvar or Stari Grad from Split.
HISTORY, CULTURE AND ATTRACTIONS
Zavala was named after the cape Zaca (from žalca), which has been mentioned since the 15th century. In Zavala, there is a country house of the Duboković Nadalini family in the Biedermeier style from 1830. Next to it is the chapel of St. George. The town is dominated by the large wine-growing complex Konteja, consolidated in 1820. Above Zavala there is also a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony. The local church is St. Peter of Verona from the 14th century.
BEACHES
In Zavala there are numerous pebble beaches and hidden coves that will provide you with peace and complete relaxation away from the summer crowds. The most beautiful is Petarčica, pebble, suitable for all generations with a restaurant nearby. The second cove is Zavala, and there is also a small naturist beach nearby.
OTHER CONTENT
There is a supermarket and several restaurants in Zavala. In the evenings you can enjoy a romantic walk along the illuminated promenade by the sea and stop by the Zavala tavern or the Skalinada or Davor restaurants. On the islet of Šćedro there is also a restaurant offering local Dalmatian food and quality wine.
SPORT
You can go for long walks or bike rides, go jogging or visit nearby climbing areas. The inevitable joys of the sea are at every turn.
WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
The island of Hvar is rich in natural and cultural heritage, so you can visit a different place every day. In Hvar, Stari Grad and the nearest Jelsa, there are travel agencies that organize excursions outside the island, boat tours to neighboring islands or day trips to Split, Makarska, Dubrovnik, Korčula and Pelješac. From Split, you can also visit nearby national parks or nature parks. For the adventurous, they organize big game fishing and safari tours around the island.
ACCOMMODATION
In Petarčica Bay there is a campsite of the same name. There are a large number of private apartments, houses and villas for vacation.
