BASIC INFORMATION AND POSITION
Povlja is a coastal town on the northeastern coast of Brač, in the Split-Dalmatia County. They are located in a deep bay and administratively belong to the municipality of Selca. According to the last list, there are 364 inhabitants who are engaged in agriculture, fishing, stone processing and tourism. Povlje can be reached from Split via Supetar, then from Makarska via Sumartin or via Brač airport.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND SIGHTS
Povlja was settled in the 17th century. They originally belonged to the parish of Gornji Humac, but in the 18th century they got a special duchess. And yet, due to the distance, the church administration focused on neighboring Selca. In the past, the port of Povlja and Luke in the west were the main port for Roman ships, as evidenced by the remains of amphorae. The place is also named after Romulus Paulus, who then built a villa in Povlja. Today, in Povlja, tourists are fascinated by the remains of the largest early Christian basilica on the island from the 5th century, where today's church of St. John the Baptist. Benedictine Glagolitic monastery from the 11th century. It is known for the Povaljska listina and the Povaljska prag, documents written in Arvatic.
BEACHES
This typical Dalmatian place is a haven of peace and quiet and is ideal for family vacations. Povlja is surrounded by attractive bays that are perfect for enjoying the sun, rocks, crystal clear waters and pine forests. These are Travna, Smokvica, Voštica, Tičja Luka, Tatinja and Luka. They provide shelter from the bora winds for sailors.
OTHER CONTENT
The restaurants in Povlji Stara uljara, Pipo and Pape offer local delicacies, fresh fish and local wine. The same goes for Jurova's car taverns, Dok and Kala. Various folklore festivals, fishing evenings, exhibitions and performances are organized during the summer.
SPORT
If you are an active tourist, you can try diving, sailing, indoor or outdoor soccer, water polo. You can rent a boat and explore the nearby coves.
WHAT TO DO AND POSSIBILITIES OF EXCURSIONS
As with all places on Brač and from the surrounding area, you can explore the island, to Vidova gora, the Blace desert, old Škrip or Dol, or even across the sea to Split or Makarska, Omiš and the Cetina River canyon.
