BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Sumartin is the youngest and easternmost town on the island of Brač. A quiet fishing village connected by a ferry line to Makarska on the mainland, which runs 5 times a day in the summer. Today, Sumartin, with its 618 inhabitants, is, along with Supetar and Bol, the gateway to Brač due to its ferry port. The economy is based on olive growing, viticulture, fishing and tourism. In addition to Makarska and Split, or Supetar, Sumartin can also be reached in the summer via Brač airport.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
The port of Sumartin was originally called Vrhbrač, and was founded by refugees from the Makarska Littoral who landed there in 1646. The foundations of the Franciscan monastery, on the site of the medieval church of St. Martin, after which Sumartin was named, were laid in 1747 by the famous Dalmatian poet, Fra Andrija Kačić-Miošić. It is also worth visiting the beautifully decorated monastery museum, where valuable Venetian canvases, various metal objects and a hand-made floor plan of the monastery from the 18th century are exhibited.
BEACHES
Pine forests, peace and quiet are offered in the secluded coves of Rasotica, Radovnja, Studena, Zukovik, Zvirje and Spilice with sandy and pebble beaches. There are also beaches of Punta, Sumartin West and Sv. Martin.
OTHER CONTENT
The gastronomic offer includes home-grown food, freshly caught fish, golden olive oil and home-made wine. Restaurants in Sumartin include Dalmatino, Harmony, Mala banda 24, and taverns Top and Leur. In addition to bars, entertainment is offered at various folk festivals, fishermen's evenings and music evenings in the town. The local festival of Our Lady of the Angels is celebrated every 2nd of August.
SPORT
Renting a car or motorbike increases the possibilities of exploring the island, with diving and sea fun, long walks and a game of indoor soccer - you couldn't wish for anything more.
WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION OPPORTUNITIES
Trips to Makarska, Split, Bol or the Cetina Canyon are the most popular due to their proximity, and of course exploring the island itself is recommended. Visit the Blaca Desert, Murvica, Škrip, Dolma - charming places that exude antiquity and tradition.
