BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Rab is an island in the northern Adriatic that stretches from northwest to southeast and is separated from the mainland by the Velebit Channel. It is surrounded by nearby islands: Krk in the north, Cres in the west and Pag in the south. Rab has a little more than 9,000 inhabitants and its administrative center is the city of Rab. Arriving on Rab by car is possible from two directions via ferry lines. The first ferry line is the pier Stinica (mainland) - Mišnjak (Rab). Stinica (5 kilometers from Jablanc near Senj) is a port suitable for arriving by car from the south or east, while for the west side and the direction from Rijeka, the ferry connection Valbiska (Krk) - Lopar (Rab) is the most suitable. Rijeka Airport is the closest place to arrive by plane, and Mali Lošinj Airport is also available, equipped for the arrival of smaller private planes. To arrive by train, the nearest station is in Rijeka, after which you can take a catamaran that departs from the port of Rijeka or a bus that goes from the bus station in Rijeka in the direction of Rab several times a day during the summer season.
DESTINATIONS - PLACES IN THE REGION
Compared to the other Kvarner islands, Rab has a smaller number of inhabited places. The cities of Rab, Banjol, Barbat, Kampor, Suha Punta, Lopar, Mundanije, Palit and Supetarska Draga can be singled out. Except for Mundani, all places are located near the sea and have a top tourist offer.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND SIGHTS
According to historical sources, Rab was originally inhabited by the Illyrians so that in the 1st century BC. Kr. became a Roman municipality under the name "Felix Arba". During the Middle Ages, it experienced its rise under the administration of Croatian rulers and the Venetian Republic as a free Adriatic commune. During the 19th century and the Austrian administration, Rab will begin its development as a tourist center. From a historical perspective, the story of the Rab stonemason St. is particularly interesting. Marino, who in the 4th century went to the Apennine peninsula and founded the Republic of San Marino. Landmarks that stand out on Rab are the many churches that bear witness to the centuries-old Christian tradition on the island. Buildings such as the Duke's Palace, the City Lodge, the City Clock and palaces such as Bakota, Dominis Nimira and Tudorini are interesting for sightseeing. Most of the sights date from the Middle Ages and they preserve many valuable collections and works of art.
BEACHES
The island of Rab has about 30 sandy beaches and is full of beautiful coves. The most famous beach in Rab is Rajska plaža, awarded with the blue flag and about 2 kilometers long, which CNN placed among the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world. Other beaches that can be mentioned are Škver, Kampor Mel, Suha Punta, Kandarola, Frkanj, Pudarica, Dumići and many others.
OTHER CONTENTS
All restaurants on the island offer a large selection of meat, fish, pasta and other delicacies of Mediterranean cuisine. You must also try the famous Raba cake, the indigenous dessert of the island. Rab's bars offer enjoyment on beautiful terraces next to the beaches, and in the evening Rab becomes one of the most interesting places on the Adriatic for nightlife due to clubs such as Santos, Oz, Lounge Bar Escape and the famous "gay friendly" bar Sanda. Rab is an ideal place for sports activities due to its beautiful nature and organized tours. Rab has numerous hiking and cycling trails, and the sports offer includes diving, hiking, tennis, kayaking and events such as Rab trekking or the Alpe Adria triathlon. There are many musical evenings, gastronomic, cultural and other events on the island during the summer, but it is necessary to highlight the famous Rab festival, the largest medieval festival in Croatia.
WHAT TO DO AND EXCURSION/SIGHTSEEING OPPORTUNITIES
Half-day and full-day trips by glass-bottom boat are possible to the nearby islands of Sveti Grgur and Doli, to Baška and the islet of Košljun near Krk, and to the east side towards Zavratnica at the foot of Velebit. An interesting destination is the Frkanj peninsula, which is famous as a love destination with many hidden coves. In addition to visiting the nearby islands, for those who want to make a little longer trips, the national parks Sjeverni Velebit, Krka or Paklenica can be recommended as destinations. The Plitvice Lakes, our oldest, largest and, according to many, the most beautiful national park, are only a few hours' drive away.
ACCOMMODATION
The offer of hotels on Rab is very rich - Grand Hotel Imperial and hotels Padova, Arbiana, Carolina, Eva, International, Istra, Epario and TN San Marino. The offer of boarding houses (the most famous Tamaris boarding house) and private apartments, the number of which is extremely large, is not far behind. Accommodation camps are AC Padova III, AC San Marino, Lando Resort and AC Zidine. Beautiful marinas available are ACI Rab, ACI Supetarska Draga, Piculjan and Lučica.
