BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Vis is an outlying Croatian offshore island in the Adriatic Sea. It is 45 km from the mainland. Area of 89.72 km and length of coast 84.9 km. The highest peak of the island is Hum with a height of up to 587 m above the sea. It is surrounded by an archipelago of numerous islands and islets, of which Brusnik, Biševo, Budikovac, Jabuka, Ravnik and Svetac stand out. According to the last census, the island has 3,637 inhabitants, who mostly live in the towns of Vis and Komiža. Vis is connected to the mainland by ferry and catamaran lines with Split. The island has paved roads, except for the road to Oključna in the northwest of the island. Vis is an ideal tourist destination for family vacations or for older people who don't like noise and crowds, and is also suitable for boaters.
DESTINATIONS
There are two main towns on the island, Vis and Komiža. Both places are located in well-protected harbors, and the ferry port is located in Vis. There is a bus connection between Vis and Komiža, as well as the possibility of renting taxis, scooters, bicycles and boats. Vis is a small island so it is very easy to explore it. Along the coast there are many coves and small tourist villages (Milna, Brgujac, Rukavac...) with private holiday homes and apartments available for rent. In the interior of the island, mostly along the old Vis-Komiža road, there are Podselje, Marine Zemlje, Podšpijle, Žena Glava, Podhumlje and Podstražje, small settlements that offer accommodation in traditional houses.
CULTURE, HISTORY AND SIGHTS
The island was inhabited since prehistoric times. The remains of the old settlement of Isse date back to the period of ancient Greece, after which the island came under ancient Roman rule. The island often changed rulers due to its favorable strategic position on the open sea and the possibility of controlling the navigation of the Adriatic. In socialist Yugoslavia, Vis was a military fortress and closed to foreigners. At that time, it counted more than 30 military facilities. Today, these forts are a tourist attraction. It is also worth visiting the Blue Cave on Biševo, the Green Cave on Ravnik, and the Titova and Kraljičina Caves on Vis.
BEACHES
Important information is that the beaches are mostly accessible by road, suitable for family trips, and because of the natural shade, they are also ideal for the youngest. Those unreachable by land can always be reached by boat. Stiniva bay is the most popular, and the others are no less beautiful. Viške - Pirovo, Grandovac, Punta od Biskupa, Stonac and Vela Svitnja or Komiške - Nova pošta, Velo žalo, Pizdica, Kamenice, Gusarica, Srebrna, Zaglav, Parja, Perna.
OTHER CONTENTS
Vis is not favorable for lovers of nightlife. In Komiža there is a disco club and some bars that are open late into the night. That is why there is a rich gastronomic offer. Numerous restaurants and taverns around the island offer fresh fish and local delicacies. We recommend trying Viška hob and Viška pogača. Cycling and hiking enthusiasts can cross the entire island on marked trails.
WHAT TO DO AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCURSIONS
There are numerous options for spending time on Vis. Every day you can leave by boat and discover a new island or cave. Wine and cultural routes are organized, but the proximity of Split also offers great opportunities. The ferry ride takes 2 hours and 20 minutes.
