BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Pula is a port and the largest city in Istria, located in the southwestern part of the Istrian peninsula. By road, Pula can be reached from the north via the Villach-Ljubljana highway. From the west, the Trieste-Kopar-Buje route can be used, while from the east, the by the Rijeka-Zagreb highway. Pula Airport is connected to several major European cities and is only 5 kilometers from the city center. The train station is located in the city center and is connected to several destinations in Croatia and Slovenia. The symbol of Pula, the Pula Arena, is the best-preserved monument of ancient architecture in Croatia, which began to be built during the time of the Roman emperor Augustus. The size of this amphitheater and its preservation rank it among the most significant in Europe and the world, and it attracts a large number of tourists every year. Other ancient monuments in Pula are the Temple of Augustus, the Double Gates, the Gates of Hercules, the Arch of the Sergi, the mosaic of the Punishment of Dirka and the small Roman theatre.
