CULTURE, HISTORY AND ATTRACTIONS
The oldest historical sources related to the city of Rijeka date back to prehistoric times. From the period of Roman rule until the arrival of the Slavs, the area around the city of Rijeka was increasingly populated (the settlement of Tarsatica), while during the Middle Ages a new settlement called Flumen Sancti Viti (River of St. Vitus) developed. During the Middle Ages, Rijeka was influenced by various noble families and its transformation into a modern industrial city began in the 18th and reached its peak in the 19th century when Rijeka came under Hungarian rule. During the turbulent 20th century, Rijeka was a separate territory that came under Italian rule in the interwar period until the end of World War II. The most famous part of Rijeka is the Korzo, which is the main city promenade. While walking through the center of the Korzo, you can immediately notice the city tower with a sculpture of a double-headed eagle and the city coat of arms that dates back to 1659. Nearby is the Cathedral of St. Vitus, which also dates back to the mid-17th century, and the nearby building of the Croatian National Theatre "Ivan pl. Zajc" from the 19th century. Over the centuries, various cultural influences have changed in Rijeka, and therefore there is much to learn when visiting Rijeka's museums. Rijeka has two historical museums - the Rijeka City Museum and the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral located in the Governor's Palace. In addition to the aforementioned, Rijeka also has the Rijeka Natural History Museum and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Among the sights, the Torpedo factory stands out, where the first torpedo in the world was produced. A historical site located outside the center of Rijeka is Trsat Castle, one of the oldest fortifications, or castles, on the Croatian Littoral. Trsat Castle offers a beautiful view of Rijeka, and in its immediate vicinity is the Church of Our Lady of Trsat, a famous Marian shrine.
