Island of Ugljan

BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION

Ugljan is an island in the Adriatic Sea, on the Croatian part of the Adriatic. It is located in the Zadar archipelago, northwest of the island of Pašman and southeast of the islands of Rivanj and Sestrunj. With an area of 50.21 km² (22 km long, up to 3.8 km wide), it is one of the larger Croatian islands. It has 7583 inhabitants. It is separated from the mainland by the Zadar channel, and it is connected to the island of Pašman by a bridge over the passage of Mali Ždrelac. It is separated from the island of Iža by the Middle Channel. The island is connected to Zadar by the most frequent ferry line on the Croatian coast of the Adriatic, which also operates at night since 2006.

DESTINATIONS

The island of Ugljan is only a couple of nautical miles away from Zadar. Such a location provides a perfect combination of an idyllic vacation and enjoying the summer city bustle, when you want it. The island of Ugljan will open the doors of its picturesque places with a long fishing tradition to visitors. These are Kali, Ugljan, Kukljica and Preko. Ancient villas and mausoleums, promenades surrounded by olive groves, the sea perfect for divers, and beaches for swimmers are a guarantee that you will not make a mistake when you choose the island of Ugljan for your vacation.

CULTURE, HISTORY AND SIGHTS

Ugljan has been inhabited since the younger Stone Age, as evidenced by found stone scrapers that are about 3,000 years old, and two archaeologically unexplored caves (Karinja jama and cave on Farč) probably hide older remains as well. We have the first hints about the name of the island in Pliny, who says that opposite Zadar is the island of Lissa. The first people known by name to live in Ugljan were the Liburni, an Illyrian tribe. In the 4th century BC, they built a settlement on the Čelinjak hill and fortified it - that rampart and several rectangular Liburnian houses have been preserved to this day. The name of the place, that is, the island of Ugljan, is interpreted differently. The largest number are those who prove that the name comes from the noun oil.

BEACHES

Ugljan has an extremely developed coast more than 20 km long with numerous smaller and larger bays, crystal clear sea and untouched nature, suitable for swimming, diving and excursions. More spacious coves are Muline in the northwest and Lamjana vela and mala in the southeast. The eastern coast slopes gently towards the sea and is divided into small bays. Every place on the island has its own beaches, pebble, stone or sandy.

OTHER CONTENTS

Culinary skill and warm service in the pleasant Mediterranean ambience of Ugljan restaurants promise superb gastronomic enjoyment in local specialties prepared from ecologically healthy ingredients from small Ugljan gardens, freshly caught fish, shellfish and crabs, and various dishes from the grill and under the oven. Ugljan is suitable for a family or recreational vacation. You can find entertainment in Kukljica, where there is a disco, and in other places in bars that are not open long into the night.

WHAT TO DO AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCURSIONS

There are many ways to spend time in Ugljan. There are a number of places worth visiting. The great thing is that Zadar is less than an hour away by ferry, and ferries run every hour or two, and there are unlimited possibilities for excursions and sightseeing.

ACCOMMODATION

The largest number of accommodations is in private rooms, apartments and holiday homes. For lovers of camping, Ugljan offers an ideal stay in one of the many campsites located in the shade of pines, olive trees or coastal oaks along the coast. There are marinas in Prek and Sutomišćica.
