Ugljan has been inhabited since the younger Stone Age, as evidenced by found stone scrapers that are about 3,000 years old, and two archaeologically unexplored caves (Karinja jama and cave on Farč) probably hide older remains as well. We have the first hints about the name of the island in Pliny, who says that opposite Zadar is the island of Lissa. The first people known by name to live in Ugljan were the Liburni, an Illyrian tribe. In the 4th century BC, they built a settlement on the Čelinjak hill and fortified it - that rampart and several rectangular Liburnian houses have been preserved to this day. The name of the place, that is, the island of Ugljan, is interpreted differently. The largest number are those who prove that the name comes from the noun oil.
