BASIC INFORMATION AND LOCATION
Šolta is an island in central Dalmatia, west of Brač, not far from Split. Its area is 51.9 km², the length of the coast is 79.45 km, and the highest peak, Vela Straža, is located at an altitude of 237 m. Along the island of Šolta, near the bay of Maslinica, there are seven other islets. The main town on the island is Grogote, and other towns are Rogač where there is a ferry port, Nečujam, Gornje Selo, Srednje Selo and Donje Selo, Stomorska and Maslinica. Šolta is connected to Split several times a day by catamarans and ferries. A catamaran line to Brač was also introduced.
DESTINATIONS
Nečujam and Maslinica and other places on the coast are the most attractive for tourists because of the facilities they offer. The ones in the interior are somewhat less attractive in terms of accommodation, but that's why they offer good restaurants, opportunities for active tourism and locations worth seeing.
CULTURE, HISTORY and SIGHTS
The island has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and was first mentioned by Pseudoskilaks in the 4th century. before Christ under the name Olyniha. It later bears the name Osolenta. With the arrival of the Croats, the name was Croatianized into the form Sulet. Then, under the influence of the Venetian government, the Croatian name was romanized into Šolta. However, Austria-Hungary, which mapped the Adriatic area in the 19th century, using Italian toponyms, played the biggest role in spreading the form of the Šolta faith. Šoltan's fields have fed generations of Šoltans for centuries. In the middle of the field is the church of St. Michael from the 14th/15th century. para. On the islet of Stipanska, there are the remains of a Benedictine monastery from the 5th/6th century. para. Throughout the island there are numerous archaeological sites worth visiting.
BEACHES
Solta has 24 bays and 4 harbors that can accommodate thousands of small yachts and the same number of swimmers. The natural environment, complete peace and quiet are completely untouched. The south side of the island is a real treasure. There are bays Šešula, Zaglav, Poganica, Tatinja, Jorja, Senjska, Stračinska, Livka and numerous others.
OTHER CONTENTS
Šolta is suitable for family and nautical vacations. If you are looking for night entertainment, you will have to go to nearby Split. The island is also ideal for recreation, especially mountain biking and hiking. Numerous restaurants and taverns all over the island offer homemade delicacies sprinkled with the acclaimed Soltan olive oil, freshly caught fish and a good drop.
WHAT TO DO AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCURSIONS
There are great opportunities for sightseeing and day trips on Šolta. Visit numerous ancient sites and the remains of villas, ancient tombs and early Christian basilicas. The proximity to Split is not negligible. Eight daily lines in the season and a ride that lasts about 50 minutes are a great convenience. The catamaran line with Milna on Brač expands sightseeing options.
ACCOMMODATION
Solta is dominated by private accommodation units, numerous apartments, rooms, houses and holiday villas. The only hotel is Heritage Hotel Martinis-Marchi in Maslinica. There is also the Mido camp in Stomorska and the Euroclub children's summer camp in Nečujmo. The modern marina in Maslinica and the moorings in Nečujmo and Stomorska offer moorings for boaters.
