In the Purkin kuk locality, megaliths were found, and in Markova and Grapeva caves, the oldest depictions of a ship in Europe were found on a fragment of a ceramic vase. Today, the island has 11,500 inhabitants who are mainly engaged in tourism, agriculture and fishing.
